Project CARE 2016 by Hong Wen School

Living out the philosophy of ‘to give is better than to receive’, Hong Wen School celebrate Children’s Day with a difference every year. On 6 October 2016, Primary 4 students, accompanied by some school staff and parent volunteers, visited the elderly at KWSH.

This activity was part of the school’s Project CARE “Children Actively Relating well with the Elderly”, which has involved students and teachers since 2006.

The elderly are always delighted by visits from schools as the youngsters ably bring spontaneous smiles to their faces. Both the elderly and the students would enjoy meaningful moments together.

During the Project CARE activity, more than 1000 students brought goodie bags to the hospital. About 100 students visited the residents in the wards while a choir put up a roving performance around the wards.

The students also penned their heartfelt wishes on lovely cards and these were left behind for the elderly, giving them cheer and encouragement.

All students who participated in this activity felt that Children’s Day Celebration was memorable and meaningful as they played their part to bring joy to the elderly before heading back to school for a celebration party.

Chan Xin Wei, Head Prefect of the school, said, “I think Project CARE is a very meaningful activity as it teaches us to be more appreciative of what we have, and helps us learn that we are fortunate and should not take what we have for granted. In addition, donating necessities to the elderly teaches us the value of compassion.”

Lynn Tan, who has been actively involved in Project CARE, shared “I fully support the school’s constant efforts in providing meaningful Values-in-Action (VIA) experiences to its students. The Project CARE helps to inculcate the values of care and compassion so that students will continue to be actively involved in the community even after they leave school.”
